THE REPRESENTATION OF THE OLIVE TREE ON GREEK COINS
Silver ten-drachma coin from Athens (467 BC). On the front of the coin is the head of Athena wearing a helmet with a wreath of olive leaves around it.

On the reverse side of the coin is an owl facing forward with its wings spread, and a small olive sprig on the top left.
Silver four-drachma coin from Athens (440-420 BC). On the front of the coin is the head of Athena wearing a helmet with a wreath of olive leaves around it.

 

On the reverse side of the coin is an owl and a small olive sprig, the sacred symbols of Athena.

 

Silver four-drachma coin from Athens (2nd c. BC). On the reverse side of the coin is an owl perched on a panathenian amphora, and encircled by a wreath of olive leaves.
