Laboratory for Olive Cultivation

  • Collection and conservation of olive genetic material for biodiversity protection and utilization in genetic improvement.
  • Identification, characterization, improvement and valorization of Greek and foreign cultivars according to their pedoclimatic requirements,  their tolerance in pests and diseases, their suitability for high density plantations, aiming at the improvement of fruit and olive oil yield and quality.
  • Modernization of orchard management practices.
  • Study of olive flowering biology and of pollination incompatibility.
  • Research on organic agriculture and integrated production systems.
  • Study of olive production systems on the environment and on the socio-economic aspects of rural areas.
  • Research on climate change - olive growing interaction.

  • Adaptation of the main Greek and foreign cultivars in the environment of Crete.
  • Identification and characterization of 42 Greek and 63 foreign cultivars and their conservation in the national olive germplasm collection.
  • Detemination of appropriate planting distance, tree shape formation, pruning type and regeneration pruning for the main olive cultivars.
  • Assessment of suitability of several olive cultivars to mechanical harvesting and combination of chemical sprays with mechanized harvest machines.
  • Identification of best performing harvesting machines (in terms of fruit removal/time ratio as well as of the least shoot damages) for minimizing the harvesting cost.
  • Identification of appropriate cultivar combinations for improved fruit yield and reduced climate-induced damages risk.
  • Collection of experimental data for sustainable organic olive farming practices.
  • Collection of experimental data for viable application of integrated production system.
  • Studies on the impact of climate change (high temperature, low temperature, UV-B radiation, water salinity) on olive.
