Water Resources - Irrigation & Env. Geoinformatics

Objectives

The main goals in Water Resources- Irrigation & Environmental Geoinformatics involve:

  • Rational agricultural water management
  • Study of plant-water-soil interaction and endurance mechanisms in extreme conditions
  • Irrigation crop needs – Develop a methodology for advising appropriate irrigation
  • Climate change and human impact on crops and ecosystemsSurface and ground water management
  • Management of hydrometeorological information at river basin scale
  • Studies and actions to address extreme hydrological phenomena (floods, drought, soil erosion, desertification)
  • Applications of geoinformatics in water resources and the environment
  • Field measurements and use of simulation models to predict the dynamics of water resources in relation to present and / or future climatic conditions
  • Water protection, maintenance or restoration of the good status of surface and ground water
  • Study and simulation of pollutant loads (fertilizers, pesticides, heavy metals, salt water intrusion, wastes, degraded irrigation water, etc.) in the soil-water resources

  • Implementation of good agricultural practices for saving water resources at field and catchment scale
  • Optimal irrigation methodology based on maximizing production and saving water resources in current and / or future climatic conditions
  • A tele-information system for farmers to irrigate crops in real time
  • Management and prediction of environmental hazards, identification of areas with high risk of water pollution - Water Protection Zones
  • Spatial and temporary simulation of water dynamic in rivers & soil-water resources
  • Optimal consumptions of surface and ground water
  • Prior knowledge of areas prone to drought, erosion, desertification, floods, and degradation of land using geoinformatics technologies – protection and mitigation measures
  • Establishment an early warning system for extreme hydrological phenomena (floods and drought)
