Conferences and Educational Activities
In support of its aim to encourage the transfer and application of new
technologies, the Institute organises a variety of national and
international meetings and seminars as well as other educational
activities.
Recent examples include:
WORKSHOPS
1. "Integrated Control of Pests and Diseases of the Main
Crops of the Prefecture of Chania", 1 March 1995.
A meeting of around 150 agronomists from Agricultural Departments,
cooperatives and representatives of the Agricultural Bank of Greece.
2. "The Rational Use of Fertilisers",
16 March 1995. A meeting organised for agronomists from the Agricultural
Department of Rethymnon. Attended by 50 agronomists.
3. "The Management of Oil Mill Waste",
27 July 1995. A meeting attended by over a hundred local oil mill
owners and technicians.
4. "Agrochemicals and the Environment",
7-8 December1996. A meeting of around 150 agronomists from all over
Greece. Organised in collaboration with the Geotechnical Chamber
of Greece (GEOTEE) and the Association of Agronomists of Chania.
5. "Organic Farming: Problems and Future Perspectives" 28-29 February 1996. A meeting attended by agronomists and organic
farmers from all over Greece. Organised in collaboration with the
Prefecture of Chania. Attended by 150 persons.
6. "The Development of the Mountainous Area of Western
Crete" 24 October 1996. A meeting held in the Institute's
conference room for mayors, presidents of the village councils and
farmers from the regions of Selino, Sfakia Kydonia and Apokoronas,
along with representatives of other local institutions. Organised
by GEOTEE. In the meeting participated 110 persons.
7. "Citrus production and marketing".
8 May 1998. A meeting organised in collaboration with GEOTEE/Branch
of Crete for agronomists and citrus growers from Crete. Attended
by 100 persons.
8. "Tropical and Subtropical Plants" 26 May 2000. A Meeting which was organized in collaboration with
the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (GEOTEE)/department of Crete,
the Prefecture of Chania and the Chania's Association of Agronomists.
9. "Institute of Olive tree and Subtropical Plants of Chania:
40 years of offer in the Rural Growth (1961-2001)" (15-16/3/2001), in which carried out presentation of the achievements
installations and plantations of the Institute in the institutions
and the rural world of Crete. In the meeting participated 180 persons.
10. "Genetically modified organisms and products" (29-6-2001), that was organized by the GEOTEE)/department of Crete.
In the meeting participated 115 persons.
11. "New measures of regulations for the support of
olive oil production - Obligations of olive mills" (2-9-2001). The meeting carried out with initiative of the Ministry
of Agriculture. In the meeting participated 110 persons.
12. "The future of olive growing in Chania Prefecture.
Problems and Perspectives", (6/7/2007) in cooperation
with Prefectural Administration of Chania. Attended by 93 persons.
13. "The olive oil extraction industry today – Best
practices for extraction of high quality olive oil" (28/9/2007), in cooperation with Prefectural Administration of Chania.
Attended by 95persons.
14. "Citriculture: Cultivars, cultural techniques,
harvesting and post-harvest practices" (29/11/2007)
in cooperation with Prefectural Administration of Chania and OADYK.
Attended by 72 persons.
15. "Olive oil: The golden liquid of Crete, Greece’
(8-9/8/2008) organized in the frame of ‘Agricultural August 2008" in the CAM in cooperation with Prefectural Administration of Chania
and the International Olive oil Council (IOOC). Attended by 112
persons.
SEMINARS
1. "Control of pests and diseases in cultivated crops" (1.3.95). Organised in cooperation with Directorate of Agriculture
of Chania Prefecture. Attended by 60 persons.
2. "Control of Planococcus citri and Alevrothrixus
floccosus in citrus orchards" (25.2.95) Organised
in cooperation with Directorate of Agriculture of Chania Prefecture.
Attended by 120 persons.
3. "International seminar on Oliveculture".
19-24 May 1997. A seminar held in the Institute's conference room.
Organised in collaboration with the International Olive Oil Council
and attended by 60 agronomists and members of cooperatives from
Greece, Cyprus, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Israel, Turkey and
Egypt.
4. "Evaluation of organoleptic characteristics of
olive oil" (12-18/12/2005). International seminar
in collaboration with the International Olive Oil Council and the
Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food. Attended by 72 persons.
CONFERENCES
1. "2nd International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural
Crops" 8-13 September 1996. Organised by the Institute
in collaboration with ISHS, GSHS etc. In the meeting participated
137 scientists from 27 countries and presented 120 papers.
2. "3rd International Symposium on Olive Growing" 22-29 September 1997. Approximately 200 scientific papers were presented
in this symposium organised in collaboration with ISHS, International
Olive Oil Council, Ministry for Agriculture.
3. "Photosynthesis in a changing world" (Photochange),
(27/5-3/6/2003). International Scientific Congress organised by
EU – CNR – NAGREF. Attended by 60 participants from different countries.
4. "Olive and the Environment", 1-3/10/2003.
International Conference organised in collaboration with COI, FEMO,
CIHEAM and the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food. Attended
by 120 participants.
5. "Integrated Control in Olives" (29-31/5/2003).
1st European meeting of the work group of IOBC/WPRS. Attended by
90 persons.
6. "Organic farming in Mediterranean basin: Problems
and Perspectives" (9-11/11/2005) International conference
organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Agricultural Development
and Food. Attended by 86 participants.
7. "The agricultural production in the new European
environment" (23-26/10/2007) 23rd Scientific Conference
of Greek Society for Horticultural Science (EEEO) in collaboration
with EEEO and the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food.
Attended by 342 participants.
